Reflections on the Scottish Rite reno: 3 things we wish Electric Works was doing
Surack Enterprises is renovating the former Scottish Rite Center at 431 W. Berry St.

Hey Locals,

This week, we’re reflecting on another significant local development in the works, Surack Enterprises’s efforts to save and modernize the historic Scottish Rite Center – and how it relates to last week's report on another historic renovation project, Electric Works.

You might remember:

  • Surack Enterprises recently sought $5M of public funding from the Capital Improvement Board (CIB) to renovate the former Scottish Rite Center – the first time Sweetwater Founder Chuck Surack has sought public funding for any of his projects.
  • His team told the CIB that public funding is required to leverage a state READI grant for the building, noting that Surack is still footing more than half of the bill for the $47M project ($5 million in work already done and an additional $23 million).

As we thought about this project, we realized there were some interesting connections to Electric Works and what we wish was happening there.

So what’s planned for the Scottish Rite Center? How does it fit in with everything else Surack is working on? And how does this relate to Electric Works?

Here's a quick summary of our notes.
